The sun on the snow is blinding
my boots squeak-crunch through the drifts
the world under my feet falls away
The frozen lake is calling to me
‘Come see my white sweep, stretching out’ –
the sun on the snow is blinding
Stepping onto the unwalkable world
Fish, turtles and beavers far below me
my boots squeak-crunch through the drifts
Crossing the lake, my mind tilts in wonder
I am between the earth and sky on this glacial surface
the world under my feet falls away

This is so lovely, Lisa. Every sensation of snow, ice, earth, and sky comes alive in this cascade! I especially lived the third stanza. Brilliant.

Ahh–exactly this, Lisa. You’ve captured it from the “squeak-crunch” to the wonder. Your frozen lake and my frozen river are part of the earth but seem otherworldly.

It does (fall away) all too literally every year here in Fairbanks- especially when some drunkass Alaskan or another decided to take his truck out for a spin- on the river.. heheheh

I love the phrase “stepping onto the unwalkable world” and the wonder of the creatures below the surface of the lake in winter!
