The Nightmarish Road

Which book’s world would be the absolute worst to live in?

The book that came to mind in response to this prompt is The Road by Cormac McCarthy. The novel won a Pulitzer Prize, and was adapted into a film. The movie portrayed the book very well, but the book is a must read, having more terrifying scenarios than the film was most likely comfortable portraying.

The story is about a father and son in a nightmarish post-apocalyptic world. The cause of the devastation of the earth isn’t named, but the world is a cold, burned-up dusty place without vegetation or animal life. Anyone they meet on the road is a threat, for without any plants or animals to eat, well, you can imagine.

Even in this hellish world, the father and son hold tight to their moral standards, and just want to get somewhere where there might be a few sane people left.

Their world is one of the most terrifying I have read about.
