Ginny watched as her orange tabby with a missing tooth took off after something in the yard. The girl followed, and saw a small bird that could not fly. Ginny scooped it up before the cat could harm it. The tiny creature was trembling. Ginny knew her mom would know what to do. Just then, Ginny’s mother pulled up in her 1984 Honda Accord, “her baby” as her mother called it, and stepped out with a red umbrella tucked under her arm. Ginny ran to her, holding out the bird and crying, “It needs help, Mother!”
Her mother took the bird from Ginny and sighed. The child was always trying to find another creature to take care of. “Go into the house and get me the box my birthday shoes came in,” she instructed the girl.
Ginny ran inside, grabbed the shoebox, dumping the shoes onto the floor, murmuring, ‘Mother hates birthdays anyway,’ and ran back outside. She was so excited to have another new pet!
