A Spine Tingling Encounter

Albert leaned against the bar, scanning the room. These hospital fund raisers were incredibly boring, but his appearance was required. Always the same people, he thought, the same pocketbooks.

A tall, dark-haired woman rose from a table in the back and made her way to the bar. As she got closer, he could see that she was very beautiful, and she moved in a way that was both athletic and feminine. Albert was very intrigued. She stood next to him as she ordered her drink. He noticed that there was no ring on her finger. Albert found himself smiling and feeling suddenly lucky to be attending the event.

“Excuse me,” he said to the woman, “but I don’t believe I know you. I am Albert Amsler, a surgeon at the hospital.” He held out his hand to the woman and she shook it gently.

“I am pleased to meet you. My name is Rachel, and I am here with my sister. She is an administrator at your hospital. I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to dress up and enjoy a wonderful dinner and free drinks.” She smiled at him, and turned, her back to the bar. Albert caught a glimpse of something on her back, a scar perhaps?

“Did you know the word ‘Rachis’ is Greek for the word spine?” Albert asked.

“I did,” she said, “but I am named after my grandmother. However, I decided to get a little playful with my name,” she said and turned her back fully to him. Albert saw that she had on a backless dress, revealing a spinal column tattooed on her back.

“What? Why, that is incredible,” he gasped. He wanted to run his finger down her spine, but restrained himself.

“What kind of a surgeon are you?” she asked.

Albert smiled again. “A spinal surgeon,” he replied and was rewarded with her delightfully lovely laugh.

“Are you teasing me?” Rachel asked and Albert shook his head.

“How about a dance?” he asked and as they walked to the dance floor, Albert placed his hand on her back and felt a thrill of excitement. Even forty years later, they both still marveled at their good fortune in meeting that night.
