Stephen had worked on this experiment for half his life. He believed he finally had the elements in balance, and he was ready to test his theory. He looked around for something to use, something innocent and harmless. Stephen spotted an orange by the test tubes. He took the orange and placed it carefully on the platform. The fruit looked tiny on the platform. Next, Stephen pressed a button and large, thick steel walls slowly moved behind the orange. He took his place behind the laser and carefully lined the orange up in the sights. This was the moment of truth – anyway, he hoped it was.
Stephen activated the laser, rechecked his positioning, and then pressed the red button. A red laser of light shot out and shone on the surface of the orange, a beautiful red-orange color. Then the laser beam stopped, and Stephen watched the orange, holding his breath. He stepped closer to the platform.
The orange wobbled. Then it slowly began to rise above the platform. Stephen watched as it rose higher and higher. He pressed a button, and the ceiling divided, opening up to the sky above. Stephen watched the orange rise above the ceiling height, and continue up into the sky. He grabbed a pair of binoculars and ran outside.
Standing under the clear, blue sky, Stephen stared through the binoculars at the orange, rising higher and higher, becoming to small he could barely see it anymore.
He did it! He conquered gravity!
