Having Fun

What’s the most fun way to exercise?

I don’t exercise, even though I should. I enjoyed hiking with my husband, but since he has passed away I have only walked a few times.

A couple of weekends ago, I went to visit my daughter who lives near Chicago, and my youngest son and his family joined us. On Saturday, we all went to the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. We had a really wonderful time walking around all the floors of the museum and enjoying all the exhibits, many of which are hands-On. Afterwards, we went to an outdoor mall and my 12 year old granddaughter looked in a few of the stores for something cool to buy. We finished off the day with dinner and dessert at the Cheesecake Factory. It was a pretty perfect day. While we were at the mall, my daughter-in-law looked at her watch and said that we had walked over 12,000 steps so far that day, which is 5-6 miles!

We had been moving our bodies all day, and were thoroughly entertained and delighted while we did it. We were tired, there was no possible way we could ignore that we were walking all day, but it was a lot of fun. If I can have fun while I’m getting exercise, then I don’t mind exercising. It could be playing football or basketball with the grandkids, going on a long walk with family, or spending all day in a museum.

  1. I always enjoyed walking when I was playing golf, but now I take a golf cart and ride, but that is still pretty good exercise, as it is probably about 3 miles of walking, but that is spread out over a four hour period.

      1. Golf is both fun and frustrating because it balances the joy of a perfect shot against the inconsistency of human mechanics, often leading to rapid mental swings. The game’s difficulty and unpredictability create an “addicting” cycle, where one good shot masks multiple bad ones, fueling the urge to return.

  2. Believe it or not- we have no malls. And there is no safe way to walk in the winter- even if the temperatures are livable- the hardpack ice is way too dangerous to just wander around on. That said- it has been near if not all week and I am thinking that I will soon be able to get outside again. I used to exercise all the time- (hand-held weights, yoga cardio) but I hated it every single moment I was doing it. Now that I am retired and have all the time in the world to exercise- I do not want to and refuse to force myself! So you are not alone!
