To My Children

your faces are always in my inner vision –
for yesterday was a second ago –
and I admit I miss those days
when smiles were missing teeth
and laughter was music bubbling,
when all of you were mine

I didn’t know it then – oh, I’m sure I was told,
but the quick change of hats kept
my head spinning –
but those were the sweetest of times,
every moment a glimpse
into pure love, a nugget of value
so dear that no price could be assigned,
the weight of your dependance
a tender thing, cradled gently against my heart,
a tiny hand wrapped around my finger,
but it was I who was utterly wrapped,
and much too quickly I was freed
when each one let go of me

Now, a moment of eternity,
my vision of you running in the grass
arms stretched out to me
oh lucky me
when you were mine

*Please don’t think I don’t appreciate my children now that they are grown. They love me just as much, maybe even more, then they did as children. It is just that sometimes I’m nostalgic for those days when they were little and we were always together, so very close.

  1. Lisa, I can empathize. In my on-going decluttering project, I came across a box of stuff from when the kids and I were in the YMCA “Indian Princess” program. I found patches from places and events, pictures, ticket stubs, maps of the camp. I was lost in thought for several moments, wondering how that all could have been 15-20 years ago. I wondered if they recall it as clearly as me.

    Sigh. 🫤❤️

    1. I wonder if they do? Thank God we have those sweet memories. Isn’t it lovely when you come across something that triggers memories of such a happy time? We were blessed to be parents, weren’t we? Some of our finest work!

    Encapsulated perfectly.
