at the beginning
no winning
your kisses like addictive nectar
your golden scepter
love was green and soft dreams
and schemes
your early face a roman God
you nod
and I your pliant playground
round and round
but your eyes oh how they wandered
trust squandered
and soon enough all of you followed
left hollowed
and me, alone, to begin anew
never needed you

This is my first attempt at an Echo Poem, so I hope I have submitted something acceptable. This is written in response to:
Our W3 challenge
- Write an echo poem about a first — first love, first heartbreak, first bike ride, first apartment, first snowfall, first pet, first anything that mattered.
- Show us how you felt — excited, embarrassed, afraid, proud, uncertain.
- Include at least one variation of one of these words:
- Early (earlier, earliest)
- Begin (beginning, began, begun, begins)
- Primary (primarily, primaries)
- Start (start, started, starting, starts)
I like this poem! I love that you ended it with such strength!

First loves can be hard at times. I love your poem- ‘but your eyes oh how they wanderedtrust squandered’. Usually, this is the turning point in love, when the trust goes… 👏😊

Thank you so much for your comment. I agree, losing trust is the turning point.

There really isn’t much as powerful as first love, you are right.

Yes, the ‘trust squandered’ couplet is the hinge. No trust, no love. A lesson learned it sounds like.

Oh yes, a very hard lesson. It didn’t go well for me. Until I realized I never needed him.

Yes, he had that profile. He definitely had a Roman nose. Blonde hair, blue eyes. He was gorgeous

Lisa, the turn from “your eyes oh how they wandered / trust squandered” to “never needed you” feels especially strong to me. I love this.
