Crowded Table

This song, “Crowded Table” reminds me so much of my home growing up, my own home, and the home of my parents where I and my three sisters and our families would gather on almost a weekly basis. We always gathered around the table, and guests were welcome at all our homes. There was laughter, joking, good food and so much love. A crowded table IS love to me. The song tells us that everyone is welcome – at the table, at the fire, at the house and that it is a safe place to be when you’re feeling broken or blue. There is unconditional love and acceptance.

This song is performed by a female group called The Highwomen, no doubt with a nod to the men’s group The Highwaymen. The group is comprised of Brandi Carlisle, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires. Shires first met with Carlisle to discuss the under representation of female country performers on radio playlists. This led to the women forming their own group in 2019. The band consisted of Dave Cobb, production and guitar, Phil Hanseroth, backup vocals, bass guitar and percussion, Tim Hanseroth backup vocals and guitar, Jason Isbell on guitar, Peter Levin, keyboards and Chris Powell on drums. “Crowded Table” won a Grammy in 2021 for Best Country Song.

You can hold my hand
When you need to let go
I can be your mountain
When you’re feeling valley-low
I can be your streetlight
Showing you the way home
You can hold my hand
When you need to let go

I want a house with a crowded table
And a place by the fire for everyone
Let us take on the world while we’re young and able
And bring us back together when the day is done

If we want a garden
We’re gonna have to sow the seed
Plant a little happiness
Let the roots run deep
If it’s love that we give
Then it’s love that we reap
If we want a garden
We’re gonna have to sow the seed

Yeah I want a house with a crowded table
And a place by the fire for everyone
Let us take on the world while we’re young and able
And bring us back together when the day is done

The door is always open
Your picture’s on my wall
Everyone’s a little broken
And everyone belongs
Yeah, everyone belongs

I want a house with a crowded table
And a place by the fire for everyone
Let us take on the world while we’re young and able
And bring us back together when the day is done
And bring us back together when the day is done

  1. The kitchen table has always been the scene of all kinds of discussion, laughter and decision making at my house too. Your thoughts on the subject are very familiar.

    1. Think of all the arguments about politics and religion you’ve avoided, though.
Seriously, though, if you ever venture my way from Alaska, you are welcome at my messy table ANYTIME ❣️❤️🫂
