For Valentine’s Day

Do we need another poem about love –

Love is too often sung and wrote

and acted and played ad nauseum,

but write me a poem about a shy

admiration or a humble declaration,

about leaving your world behind to

chase the happiness of another,

about watching a human that you made

with someone come into the world,

of chicken soup and chemo and hospital

stays and surgery, sickness, sadness and

broken hopes, and shaking hands held tightly.

Write me a poem about love that whispers

in the night, that guides you home,

that fights the darkness, that heals your heart.

Write about a love that defies all logic, that

stays behind when the coffin is closed,

that lasts, when your heart is breaking

and your arms are empty.

Still it lasts.
