Stewed Comfort

Lean meat for stew cut in chunks,
floured and seared in a puddle of oil
then cast into the slow cooker
upon a bed of carrots, celery and potatoes.
Rich broth in the pan with rosemary
and pepper, spices and tomato paste
and a bit of brown sugar
stirred and poured over all.
We wait for the meal to be done,
some crusty bread and butter on the
side and a glass of cold milk
or hot tea to drink and we have
a meal to comfort our hearts
on this chilly, blustery day.

  3. Lisa, the step-by-step approach works well in your poem because you include sensory details, especially in the opening. I read it like the cooking itself: unhurried, practical, and sure-handed. I also thought the pacing and tone were right for a slow stew: patient, steady, no theatrics. It comforts because it’s real and worth the effort. A slow-cooked beef stew, cooked in a Dutch oven over the coals of a campfire, is probably the closest I come to comfort food, so thanks for bringing that to mind so effectively.
