Donovan Leitch, known as Donovan, is a Scottish musician, songwriter and music producer. He was part of the British folk scene in the 1960’s and recorded several internationally known albums and singles in the late 1960’s. His work was symbolic of the flower power era with its mix of folk, pop, jazz, and psychedelia. Donovan has released at least 29 albums from 1965 to 2022. He was compared to Bob Dylan, with some critics saying he was copying some of Dylan’s song styles. Donovan was considered by many to be a hippie folk ideal, and in the late 1960’s to the early 1970’s, he lived at Stein, on the Isle of Skye, where he and a group of followers formed a commune and where he was visited by George Harrison. Donovan named one of his daughters Ione Skye. He also explored different religious beliefs, eventually becoming a Pagan, and he combines Celtic mythology, Buddhism and goddess worship, saying that every other song of his celebrates the goddess, Mother Nature.
Obviously, I could have picked from hundreds of songs of Donovan’s for this challenge, but I have chosen his song “I Like You.” When I was a youngster one of my best friends got to buy any and all new albums as soon as they came out and we would sit around and listen to a new album and talk. When we heard “I Like You” and the lyrics “I held you, You felt me, I touched you, You kissed me,” we fell into gales of laughter like two girls our age could. So, it brings back good memories of curiosity, fun and innocence. Donovan’s song, “I Like You” reached number 66 in the US and became the last charting single that Donovan has had to date.
You’re such a good friend
I’d hate to have you as an enemy
From the first time we met
I knew you were the one to set me free
You liked me
I liked you
You liked me
I liked you
Holding my heart in the palm of your hand
Headed out west for the Indian lands
Dreams of the golden boy tangling your mind
Burning your body to fill in the time
Sad city sister on Avenue of Palm
I knew naively that I was your man
I followed after with heavy heart of lead
Just like a man who walks, yet is dead
I asked you to dance
And you wondered and you thought you might
So we went and took a chance
On the cat walk in the cold star light
I held you
You felt me
I touched you
You kissed me
Holding my heart in the palm of your hand
Headed out west for the Indian lands
Dreams of the golden boy tangling your mind
Drugs aid your body to fill in the time
Sad city sister on Avenue of Palm
I knew naively that I was your man
I followed after with heavy heart of lead
Just like a man who walks, yet is dead
