Sideways

That afternoon I smelled rain in the air. There was a storm coming, and the sky was strange color of yellow. It was cool and a fog was gathered low to the ground. I took the sheets off the clothesline, watching as the sky darkened in places and lightened in others at the same time, that strange yellow color still all across the sky. I saw the yellow fog that rubs its back against the window panes, writhing on the ground. The fog was thick and almost intimidating. I shivered.

From inside I watched the rain come across the fields sideways, racing towards our home. The fog skittered away, the yellow hue dissipated and the sky turned all gray. The strangeness was gone, and it was just a September day with much needed rain falling like tiny gifts on the fields.

  1. I love the way you set the scene and appealed to the senses, Lisa: smelling the rain in the air; the strange yellow sky – I’ve seen skies like that too; the sideways rain – I know that kind of rain; and the ‘rain falling like tiny gifts on the fields’. Just delightful.
