The Old Chevy

Daddy made the best shine in West Virginia, and it put food on our table. He taught me his secrets. I was fourteen when I quit school and began running shine all over the mountains. I knew every back road, and our old Chevy could eat them up.

One night, Sheriff Baxter saw me and gave chase. I flew down the roads, shine tinkling in the back seat. I wasn’t worried until the Chevy blew a hose. I backed it into the woods, praying no one would find the shine until Daddy could retrieve it. No one did.

  1. Great story, Lisa. Of course, based on the picture, I’m wondering if the father eventually came and got it or if no one ever found it. That would be quite a discovery, to find an old car full of moonshine in the woods. 🙂
