Helen placed the persimmon cookies she made on a pretty plate. She watched her husband, Walt, working in their garden when she saw him stumble. Helen went to the back door.
“Walt! Please take a break? I baked some cookies.”
Soon, he had a glass of cold milk and one of Helen’s treats. “These are good, Helen,” he paused, “I am so sick of being old.”
Helen was surprised, he never complained. Now she thought of how tired he was lately, how little he ate, and she knew he had lost weight.
“Maybe the grandkids would help with the garden,” Helen suggested.
“Yes,” Walt agreed, “The future gathers in vine, bush, and tree: Persimmon, walnut, loquat, fig, and grape. And tomatoes,” he added and smiled. “Its our legacy. We don’t have much else,” he said sadly.
“Its enough,” Helen said and kissed him.

“The future gathers in vine, bush, and tree: Persimmon, walnut, loquat, fig, and grape.” From the poem “Time and the Garden.” by Yvor Winters
Getting old is better than the alternative, but the changes are frustrating.

Yes. But it is pretty sad for him to think that way. It would help if the garden was a vineyard!

My sister still makes them. It’s very labor intensive 💞
