Indiana soil a brown and dry field
my son put pumpkin seeds in my hand
and with prayers for a bountiful yield
I walked down the rows he had planned
and he stood with some pride on his land
we pushed a seed in earth every three feet
I dreamed I helped him with something grand
enormous pumpkins no one could beat

Lisa, I think “we pushed a seed in earth every three feet” lands so gently and intentionally — I feel the care in every motion. The quiet pride and dreaming between mother and son makes this piece especially moving to me.

I love pumpkin. I eat it like squash and bake the seeds.

That’s a good idea, to eat it like squash. I do love the seeds after they’re baked, too.

Nice write. I wish we could get our pumpkins like the picture. Ours grow without thought or care though.

Thank you for your kind comment and I agree with you – the stock photo makes the ones we planted last year look puny lol
