How do you want to retire?
I do not know how to retire. I have passed my retirement age, and gone right on working. I was going to retire at the end of this year, but I’m not sure I will. I like having my salary, and my pension will only be one third of my salary, which isn’t much.
I’m not sure what I would do in place of working, but I guess that isn’t much of a problem since everyone retired always says they are busier than ever. If I didn’t go to work everyday I would have time to work out, go visit my family, and organize my house. But would I? What if I slept in every morning, and watched TV and got depressed? So, I continue to work. And I suppose I will continue to work until I feel certain that it’s time for me to stop. I’m waiting for a voice inside my head to say, “Enough!” or for a feeling of certainty to fill my heart.
When I retire, I want to retire with certainty that the time has come to close this chapter in my life. I want certainty, because once I leave my job of 26 years, I won’t be able to get it back. I have no idea what is next in my life’s journey after I retire, what my purpose will be, and that is kind of scary.
I retired last July and couldn’t be more content in my decision. When the time is right, you’ll know it.

Thank you for saying this! I keep waffling back and forth, but it helps to hear you say I will know when the time is right.

If you’re happy and don’t really want to retire, then don’t. Follow your gut, not some number that says how old you are.
