It’s Over

We had both grown quiet. I wanted to ask him, but I was afraid. Afraid I would lose him. I kissed his neck, stalling.

“Would you cheat on someone you love?” I asked, looking up at his face, which had quickly turned into a mask without expression.

“Why are you asking me this?” he asked.

“Because I care for you and if you were sleeping with someone else, it would hurt me, a lot. And to hurt is to steal my trust and my hopes.

“Look, I’m not like that, okay?” he said, standing ready to flee. “I do care for you. But we’ve never talked about being exclusive. I thought we were just having fun.”

“Fun’s over,” I said and left. He just watched me go. I realized he may not have cheated on me, I’ll never know, but now it’s over.

  1. Sounds like some communication issues and expectations. Maybe, it is better she move along. Fun is over.

  2. Lisa, I really like the story you built around the line. You conveyed a complex situation in just a few words. I hope he gives “them” some thought and decides to “go exclusive” with her.

  3. I read this as a feminist work in which she trusted her gut and left before she got walked on, deceived and taken. Girl power! She’s going to wait for the guy who actually deserves her, and doesn’t turn into a “mask without expression” when asked a question from the heart.
