The sea turtle made her way into the beach. She was going to lay eggs in the sand. She was born on this same beach, and if her sisters survived, they will also return to this beach to lay their eggs. This is called natal homing.

Before the sea turtle became pregnant, she had been feeding in near coastal areas anywhere from a year to several years to store up enough fat to mate and then nest. The distance between feeding and breeding areas can be hundreds to tens of thousands of kilometers!

The sea turtle would come up onto the beach to lay more eggs in 7-15 days. Her eggs will incubate in the sand 45-65 days before they hatch. It can take a few days for all the babies to hatch and make their way to the surface. Then the baby turtles wait until night before they go to the ocean as quickly as possible and head out to the deep sea. They are very vulnerable going from the nest to the water and darkness helps hide them. If they survive, a sea turtle can live 50 or more years.

  2. When I lived in Florida, I used to walk my dogs on the beach at sunrise- I was privileged to watch the babies heading for the sea- and my Doberman ate one of them- but don’t tell anyone else…
