She walked down to the beach, a long cover up over her bathing suit and a big, floppy straw hat on her head. Large sunglasses blocked the intensity of the sun. The hotel’s private beach had brightly colored deck chairs with striped beach umbrellas scattered across the sand. She paused, looking around carefully at the guests already gathered there, then picked a chair and placed her beach towel over it before sitting down.
She placed her large bag at her feet, reached inside for sunscreen and began to apply it to her skin. A handsome young man brought an icy paloma and placed it on a table beside her. “Thank you,” she said, and sipped the drink. She placed the sunscreen back in her bag and pulled out a camera, placing it in her lap under her cover up. She looked across the sand toward the green-blue waters, which were so inviting. Not yet, she told herself, using a towel to wipe her hands and brow and neck. The sun was so warm on her skin, and her body cried out for the cool water.
She removed her sunglasses and pretended to read, but her eyes were trained on an older man and a blond woman sitting in chairs about 20 yards away. The couple were talking and laughing and drinking cocktails. After some time of patiently watching, she saw the blond woman stand and walk toward the water. The man followed the blond, and they walked hand in hand into the shallows. She raised her camera and clicked off several shots. The couple continued to walk out into the water, their backs to her. She remained patient. The man threw his arms around the blond, embracing her and she responded in kind, raising her face for his kiss. She could see the man’s face clearly now through her lens, and she took a dozen more photographs, then dozens more as the couple kissed, embraced and walked to shore together.
Watching out for the sand, she carefully laid her camera back in her bag and closed it up. Throwing off her cover up and hat she ran for the water for a quick swim. The couple passed her, smiling brightly and she smiled back at them. Her client would be thrilled with the pictures, but also heartbroken and angry. Such is love, she thought, as she dove into a wave, feeling the soft, cool water across her hot skin. Ah, this is paradise, she thought.
