It was a rainy April morning, but warm enough that when the rain stopped Maggie decided they had to get out of the house. She put out warm clothing for her four year old, Casey, and helped him put on his cute hiking boots. Together, they went outside to greet the day.
The trees were starting to bud, Maggie noticed and smiled. Spring would come after all. Winter dug in its claws and made it seem like it would never happen.
“Mom, look!” Casey cried and pointed at the sky behind them. “It’s a rainbow! Let’s go to it!”
“Oh, honey,we can’t go to it. It is much farther away than it looks. But we can go in that direction today and look at it while we walk. Would you like that?”
“Yes,” Casey said. Then he sang a little song while he entertained himself as they walked. He balanced on the curb, found a rock to throw into the street, jumped over cracks in the sidewalk and pulled up a crocus he saw in someone’s yard and presented it to her. “This is for you and the rainbow, Mommy,” he said.
“Why, thank you, Casey. The rainbow and I love it.” She took the flower and kissed his cheek.
“My legs are tired,” he said, “would you carry me?”
“Okay, I can do that,” she said and lifted him up onto her hip. “That better?” she asked. He nodded and lay his head on her shoulder for a moment.
Maggie stopped walking and really looked at the rainbow. It was very bright and its colors were vibrant. It was beautiful. She listened to the birds singing, and heard the distinctive call of a cardinal. The breeze blew Casey’s hair and it tickled her neck. She was perfectly happy.
