Corinne Bailey Rae is a British singer and songwriter. She is best known for her single “Put Your Record On”, and was named the number one predicted breakthrough act of 2006 in an annual BBC poll of music critics. She released her debut album “Corinne Bailey Rae” in 2006 and became the fourth female British act in history to have her first album debut at number one. The album sold over 4 million copies.
Bailey Rae began her musical career at school, learning classical violin. However, she turned her attention to singing and performed in the churches she attended. After recording two albums with the worship ministries youth group, the youth pastor loaned her money to buy her first guitar.
While attending college, Corinne worked as a cloakroom attendant ar a local jazz club. There she met Jason Rae, a Scotsman and talented saxophonist. In 2008, Jason Rae was found dead in a flat in Leeds, the coroner determined he died of an accidental overdose of methadone and alcohol. One of Jason’s friends had been talking methadone for a heroin addiction. Bailey Rae said the experience was the closest she had come to death herself, because “it was challenging to keep in life at the time.”
The song I have chosen for this Thursday Inspiration, “Like A Star”, is part of the soundtracks of several films, series and soap operas. I chose this song because although she maintains that this man is the love of her life, she also admits that she doesn’t argue with anyone else like she does with him. It could be that this love won’t last, and it has the word ‘star.’ The song, the video and her lovely voice are mesmerizing.
