Her Hobby

Judy supposed she was an overbearing mother, but she couldn’t help herself. Her son, Ronny, had left the house to go to “the library.” She didn’t believe that for a second. What she did believe was that Ronny was up to no good. So, she decided to follow him, something she did on occasion. After all, she had to protect him from himself. Ronny had some friends that she didn’t approve of, and she wanted to make sure he wasn’t getting into trouble.

“Aha!” she exclaimed when Ronny’s car parked at a little strip mall. She parked where he couldn’t see her and watched as he walked into a sandwich and coffee shop. “Not the library,” she said out loud. Cautiously, Judy walked toward the sandwich shop. It had a big window in front, and she didn’t want to get caught spying on Ronny, but she had no need to worry. Ronny was sitting at a table right there, behind the window, and he had his back to her. Plus, the window was fogged up, which made it even better. She squinted to see who was at the table with him. It wasn’t one of his friends, it was a girl.

It was the girl from down the street, September. Judy was friends with her mother. Judy had laughed at the girl’s name at first, but after she got to know September a bit better, the name seemed to suit the girl. September was studious, kind, and serious, and did well in school.

Judy went back to her car to see where Ronny and the girl would go next. After a time, they came out together and got into Ronny’s car. Judy followed them, and they went straight to the library.

“I wonder why he didn’t just tell me he was going to hang out with September?” she wondered. Surely he must know that she would be thrilled at the news. But Ronny hadn’t wanted her to know, at least not yet, and that was okay.

“I’m going to have to get a real hobby,” she murmured as she turned her car to drive home.
