Silver

Silver is the sister of gold. She is the one that is not quite as beautiful or vivacious as gold. Yet silver is also a color of glamour and elegance. It can represent purity, redemption and strength, yet it can also represent corruption, like when Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver to the soldiers of the high priest Caiaphas. If nothing gold can stay, then perhaps silver has the ability to last. Silver is reflective and is used in mirrors. Silver has power over evil, if you believe that silver bullets can kill werewolves, witches and monsters. Silver is lovely and ethereal, and we sigh over silver moonlight, silver starlight, and silver dancing on the waters. We also sigh over silver in our hair.

I believe that every living thing is connected by silver threads or cords because of a vision I had as a child. I believe that when we die, our silver cord is cut and the ends that joined us to the living meld together in our empty space. We are not as alone and individual as we think; we are part of the world, literally joined to everything and everyone.

When I was a young woman, I was obsessed with silver and turquoise jewelry. I had rings on every finger and a lot of necklaces and bracelets. I had some beautiful pieces that I wish I still had, but I pawned them many, many years ago.

“For the man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets. Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain or the wheel broken at the well. Then the dust shall return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. ‘Vanity of vanities,’ says the Preacher, ‘All is vanity.'” Ecclesiastes 12:6-8 (believed to be written by King Solomon)
