Mark lay in bed, his hands behind his head, watching Helen get ready for work. He enjoyed watching her, the confident way she fixed her hair and make-up, how she could mix pieces of her wardrobe to make interesting outfits. He sat up and sipped from his cup of coffee.
“Do you have a boring day ahead?” he asked her.
“No, not really. We’re having a meeting this morning, so that will be interesting. I think that guy I can’t stand is going to get yelled at. I’ve been looking forward to that.”
Mark hesitated, sipped more coffee. “I’m going to talk with Greg today. About the band.” Mark moved to the end of the bed, closer to the bathroom where Helen was standing at the mirror. She could see his reflection, earnest and hopeful. “I think the timing is right, Helen. The new drummer is awesome and we’re really coming into our own. Greg and I are going to talk to the owner of Luckys to see if we can play there every Saturday night. Its a natural progression, really. We’ve done well at Luckys and we want a consistent gig there.”
Helen closed her eyes, and Mark knew that was a bad sign. “Why do you insist on trying to make something of this band you play around with? And Luckys is a joke, Mark. Why can’t you just be happy with your job at the garage? With my income, we get by okay. Playing at a club every Saturday night just leaves me lonely and bored while you waste your time, and it ties us down.”
“You think the band is a waste of time? Why am I surprised, you say this every time I get excited about an opportunity. Why can’t you get excited for me? Why do you have to kick sand on my dreams every single time?”
“Oh, shut up, Mark. Honestly, if you’re gone Saturday night I might go find some company. Maybe you should think about that,” Helen said and left the bedroom.
Mark could hear her leave for work. He put his head in his hands. He didn’t know what to do.
I’ve been searching for my dream
A hundred times today
I build them up, you knock them down
Like they were made of clay
Then the tide rushes in
And washes my castles away
Then I’m really not so sure
Which side of the bed I should lay
I should lay
You keep looking for someone
To tell your troubles to
I’ll sit down and lend an ear
Yet I hear nothing new
Then the tide rushes in
And washes my castles away
Then I’m really not so sure
Which side of the bed I should lay
I should lay
Blackbird sitting in a tree
Observing what’s below
Acorns falling to the ground
He’ll stay and watch them grow

This is written in response to Thursday Inspiration by Jim Adams. The song seems to be about the inability the singer has to follow his dreams because he has no one to encourage him and he’s too weak or afraid to leave the one that doesn’t believe in him.
