What’s the kindest thing someone has ever done for you?
When I read this prompt, it made me think: What’s a kindness YOU have shown someone lately? Oh, boy. I try, but I could do much better.
I have been shown many kindnesses. My husband fought cancer for 5 years. During that time, so many people showed us love. He received cards and so many people prayed for us. The nurses and doctors were very kind. People offered help, although we usually managed.
I have written about a young man that gave me a ride to pick up my son when my car broke down on a busy interstate’s off ramp. A relative-in-law gave me his wife’s car to drive until I could get mine repaired. When my mother died, all my co-workers came to the funeral. My parents let me move back in with them a couple of times after I left home with no demands or questions. So many kindnesses, more than I can share here, more than I can remember.
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me would have to be the way my husband worried about me when he was dying. During our marriage, we took care of each other, and he knew I’d be lost without him. He made our children promise to take care of me, more than once. He worried about me, and this worry was a kindness that told me he loved me more than anything, as I loved him, and that he couldn’t rest until he knew I’d be okay. He was so brave and he fought to the end to be with us. I only wish he was still alive.
