I have been thinking about this question on and off all morning, and I think I realize something about ‘the best compliment’ one has ever received.
What I would consider ‘the best compliment’ would reveal what is really important to me – an area in my life where I’d like to succeed.
If I considered the best compliment to be about my appearance, that would reveal that my appearance is very important to me. If it was about my work or abilities, then that would reveal that my work is at the top of my list of things I want to do well. If I wanted to succeed as a singer, then a compliment about my looks wouldn’t please me as much as a compliment about my voice would.
I have had many compliments about my competency at my job, my strong work ethic and dedication. I have received many compliments about the way I looked when I was younger. But for me, the best compliment I’ve received had to do with my role as a parent. I was lucky enough to have children, and blessed enough that they have forgiven me for all the ways I fell short as a mother, which were many. So when my kids compliment me for how much I love them, or how I am there for them, that is the best compliment of all. Because nothing comes close to how important they are to me.
