A small kitten by the side of road caught the eye of the seven year old boy. His mother was driving, and had stopped at an intersection when he spotted the little creature.
“Mom!” he cried, “Stop, don’t go! There’s a kitten!” he pointed excitedly at the side of the road where a little brown kitten wobbled. It was obviously weak.
Oh, no, thought Megan. All I need to is to bring another animal home to die. Why doesn’t Kevin ever spot a healthy animal to rescue? “Oh, honey,” Megan said, “I’m sure he belongs to someone.”
“No, he doesn’t,” Kevin shot back quickly, then tried to open his door.
“Stop right there, Kevin! Let me pull over properly and we can have a look.” With a huge sigh, Megan pulled over and parked. There was no traffic, thank goodness. She got out of the car and joined her son, already beside the kitten. Kevin was petting the feline, and it answered his kindness with a shaky meow and pushed its head against his hand.
Megan assessed the kitten. It was brown, dirty, had crusty eyes and it appeared its tail had been run over. Oh my, she thought. Why did I have this incredibly sweet kid? This is going to cost me.
After heaving another loud sigh, Megan said, “Okay, put it in the car. Let’s go the vet’s.” Kevin smiled so brightly that the sun paled in comparison, and let out a squeal of delight.
“We’re going to save her, Mom,” he said, cradling the cat against his chest. He handed the creature to his mother while he buckled his seatbelt, then reached for the furry bundle.
It was nearly closing time at the local veterinary’s office. They went inside, Megan looking sheepishly at the receptionist. “Oh, hello,” the receptionist greeted them, “I see you two have been on another rescue mission?”
“I’m so sorry, but I think this kitten needs help,” Megan began, but the veterinarian herself came out into the waiting room and began to look the kitten over.
The vet opened the door to the rooms in the back. “Come on in,” she said and led them to a room with a table. The vet placed the kitten on the table and after examining it, she turned to Megan & Kevin. “This kitten has fleas, worms, and needs medicine for her eyes and ears. It also needs to have a portion of its tail removed. Looks like the tail was run over by a car. I’m sure it has not had any shots, either. Are you willing to take this on?”
“Yes, we are,” Kevin answered immediately and Megan nodded, smiling weakly.
“Well, I can do the surgery today. I will do the rest tomorrow before you come and pick the kitten up.” The vet looked at Kevin. “Do you want to know if it is a girl or a boy?” she asked. Kevin nodded. “This is a girl kitten,” the vet told him. “If I were you, I’d be thinking about a name. And don’t worry. I will take really good care of her. I think she is going to be just fine.” She gently tousled Kevin’s hair and everyone smiled.
The next day, Kevin and Megan picked up their new kitten, newly named “Smidgin” by Kevin. The receptionist brought the little creature out to them and they both gasped in surprise. The little kitten wasn’t brown at all! Its coat was silky and a yellowish color, very lovely to see. Smidgin’s tail, what was left of it, was bandaged up, and she had a little white plastic collar shaped like a cone around her neck. “You cannot take this cone off,” she advised and handed Megan a paper with directions on how to care for the amputation. “The doctor wants to see her in a week.” Megan and Kevin left with their little yellowish bundle of fur, the kitten now purring loudly.
“Oh, Mom, I love her so much already,” Kevin declared. Megan smiled. She kind of liked the scrappy little kitten, too. Now, Kevin and Smidgin just had to work their magic on Megan’s husband in order to get his blessing. Somehow, Megan wasn’t worried.
