Little bullfinch, God gave you pretty
red feathers to fluff to keep warm,
I see you on the berry branch
shivering after the winter’s storm.
Out here, you are small and exposed
but you do not want my care
except for the suet I just put out
hanging high in the frosty air.
I hope you make it, sweet little bird,
into Spring, when the world welcomes rebirth,
so I can keep marveling at your strength
as your beautiful song fills the earth.
