The Party is Over

The party was over. As usual, Marvin had been a complete ass. He drank too much, flirted with all of Ashley’s friends, and tried to be the center of attention. She had walked the last guest to the door and gone back outside to clean up. Ashley had thought a party around the pool would be a fun way to end the summer, and the party had been fun when she ignored Marvin. She tipped the bartender and he left. Marvin was still sitting at a table by the pool, sipping his drink.

“Oh, Ash, that was a blast! Come here and sit with me, baby. We can keep partying,” he smiled a wolfish grin at her and chuckled. She turned, her stomach churning.

What am I doing? she thought. Is this really the man I’m going to be with for the rest of my life? Have children with? Grow old with?

Ashley kicked off her heels and started walking his way. She dropped her expensive jeans and kicked them away, too. She gave him a seductive look as she walked to him. Then she walked right past him and jumped into the pool. She swam to the other end of the pool and came up for air, feeling somehow washed clean of him, a baptism of a sort.

As she exited the pool, she said, “Marvin, it’s over.” Letting the water run down her body, she went inside to pack a bag.

The image depicts a dark-haired woman underwater with light shining up from below. Her legs are bent so that her feet are behind her and we cannot see them. Her arms are outstretched, her left arm lifted. She wears a blue button-down blouse. She exhales air bubbles into the water.
