The song I have chosen for Jim Adam’s Thursday Inspiration is “Smooth” by Santana and Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20. The song tells about a guy who is crazy about his “muñequita” or girlfriend he gave the nickname “doll” to. He says when she whispers the whole world melts, she is his reason for living and the step in his groove. He would give his life for her, and even change his life to better suit her mood because she is so smooth.
The song was released to radio in June 1999, was the lead single on Santana’s Supernatural album released the same year. It was written by Itaal Shur and Robert Thomas.
“Smooth” was originally written by Itaal Shur as a song entitled “Room 17.” The lyrics were stripped off and it was given to Robert Thomas, who re-wrote the lyrics and melody and “Smooth” was created. Rob Thomas recorded a demo for Santana, and when Santana heard the song he decided to record it with Thomas. Playing the song was Rob Thomas – lead vocals, Carlos Santana – lead guitar, Benny Rietveld – bass, Chester Thompson – keyboards, Rodney Holmes – drums, Raul Rekow – congas, Karl Perazzo – percussion, Jeff Cressman – trombone, José Abel Figueroa – trombone, Javier Melendez – trumpet, William Ortiz – trumpet.
The song was a huge hit, outperforming Santana’s most popular song, “Black Magic Woman” and on Billboard magazine’s rankings of the top songs of the first 50 years of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, “Smooth” was ranked as the number-two song overall and the number-one rock song in the history of the chart.
Man, it’s a hot one
Like seven inches from the midday sun
Well, I hear you whisper and the words melt everyone
But you stay so cool
My muñequita, my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa
You’re my reason for reason
The step in my groove
And if you said this life ain’t good enough
I would give my world to lift you up
I could change my life to better suit your mood
Because you’re so smooth
And it’s just like the ocean under the moon
Oh, it’s the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kind of lovin’ that can be so smooth, yeah
Give me your heart, make it real, or else forget about it
But I’ll tell you one thing
If you would leave it’d be a crying shame
In every breath and every word
I hear your name calling me out
Out from the barrio
You hear my rhythm on your radio
You feel the turning of the world, so soft and slow
It’s turning you round and round
And if you said this life ain’t good enough
I would give my world to lift you up
I could change my life to better suit your mood
Because you’re so smooth
Well, and it’s just like the ocean under the moon
Well, it’s the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kind of lovin’ that can be so smooth, yeah
Give me your heart, make it real, or else forget about it
Well, and it’s just like the ocean under the moon
Oh, it’s the same as the emotion that I get from you
You got the kind of lovin’ that can be so smooth, yeah
Give me your heart, make it real, or else forget about it
Or else forget about it
Or else forget about it
Oh, let’s don’t forget about it
Give me your heart, make it real
Let’s don’t forget about it (hey)
Let’s don’t forget about it (now, oh, now, oh)
Let’s don’t forget about it (now, now, now, oh)
Let’s don’t forget about it (hey, now, now, oh)
Let’s don’t forget about it (hey, hey, hey)

Great choice, Lisa and Carlos Santana scored his first hit in decades with this tune, and man, this a hot one. Clive Davis worked with him on his previous hits Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways and Oye Como Va, so they teamed up again and struck gold.
