The song “Yesterday” is a ballad about a relationship that has ended. Biographers of Paul McCartney and The Beatles have written that the song came to McCartney in a dream. The story goes that upon waking, he played the song on the piano so he wouldn’t forget it. Initially he was concerned that he had plagiarized the tune, and he went around asking everyone if they had heard the song. After a few weeks, when no one claimed to have heard it, he claimed it as his own and began to try to write lyrics for the music. There was a piano on one of the stages where they were filming Help! so McCartney would sneak away and work on the song on the set. This infuriated the director, who told him to finish the song or he would remove the piano, and also tested the patience of the other Beatles. George Harrison said, “Blimey, he’s always talking about that song. You’d think he was Beethoven or somebody!” Lennon reportedly said that they worked on the song for months and months and began calling it “Scrambled Eggs” because they couldn’t come up with a title. Lennon said that McCartney woke up one morning and it was all there, the music, lyrics and title and he was a bit sad because they had so much fun with it.
The track was recorded at Abbey Road Studios on June 14, 1965. The Guinness Book of World Records stated that by January 1986, 1600 cover versions of the song had been made.

Yesterday
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Suddenly
I’m not half the man I used to be
There’s a shadow hangin’ over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly
Why she had to go, I don’t know, she wouldn’t say
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday
Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Why she had to go, I don’t know, she wouldn’t say
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday
Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Mm mm mm mm mm mm mm
Songwriters: John Lennon / Paul McCartney
Nice use of the prompt, Lisa and a great choice of music that was explicitly explained. In John Lennon’s song How Do You Sleep?, he makes fun of Paul saying, “The only thing you done was Yesterday / And since you’re gone you’re just another day.” Thanks for joining in with your lovely post.
