My Wheels

What’s the one luxury you can’t live without?

I would define luxury as something not essential to life, an extra something that makes life more pleasant.

The luxury that I cannot live without is my wheels. I don’t have to have a $100,000 car, but I value a comfortable, reliable car that is safe for the road and that can take me where I want to go. A car is freedom. A car is an opportunity to earn money. A car is the ability to get away.

There have not been many times in my life when I did not own a car. I can recall a time in my late teens when I had to take the bus to work. That was miserable. All I did was save every penny I could so that I could buy a car.

I believe that owning a car has the power to pull you out of poverty.

My grandfather once told me that he believed he had seen more change in his lifetime than any other generation will be able to witness. He said that when he was a little boy his family had a horse and a wagon for transportation, and that he had gone from that to seeing a man walk on the moon. I think he was right.

I used to think that the United States would get to a place where they would have mass transportation systems crisscrossing the country. Now I know that will never happen. So, the luxury item that I cannot do without is a car.
