Ella Jane Fitzgerald, referred to as the “First Lady of Song” was an American singer, songwriter and composer. She first found musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, and she took over the band with Webb passed away. Fitzgerald recorded many popular songs and appeared in films and on television shows. Outside her solo career, she created music with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and The Ink Spots. These partnerships produced songs such as “Dream a Little Dream of Me“, “Cheek to Cheek“, “Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall“, and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)“. In 1993, after a career of nearly sixty years, she gave her last public performance. Three years later, she died at age 79 after years of declining health. Her accolades included 14 Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts, the NAACP‘s inaugural President’s Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (source, Wikipedia)
Moonlight Serenade
I stand at your gate
And the song that I sing is of moonlight
I stand, and I wait
For the touch of your hand in the June night
The roses are sighing
A moonlight serenade
The stars are aglow
And tonight, how their light sets me dreaming
My love, do you know
That your eyes are like stars brightly beaming?
I bring you, and I sing you
A moonlight serenade
Let us stray till break of day
In love’s valley of dreams
Just you and I, a summer sky
A heavenly breeze, kiss in the trees
So don’t let me wait
Come to me tenderly in the June night
I stand at your gate
And I sing you a song in the moonlight
A love song, my darling
A moonlight serenade
