First Impression

In order to make a good first impression, show up on time and be ready to engage.

Dress appropriately, not to stand out or be out of place.

You should be prepared to discuss topics that will likely be brought up, so study these topics and get your thoughts in order; do not make any statements about something you know nothing about and stick to the facts when possible.

Be interested and interesting, and always be kind and generous.

If someone tries to engage you in a controversial topic, make sure you know your audience and can respond in a friendly, nonconfrontational manner or simply make a joke out of the question, like “My mother taught me to never discuss politics at dinner,” or try to respond with a neutral comment.

You also must be genuine and be yourself, because you want to impress your audience with the real you.

  2. You have a point. I guess I was trying to say don’t stir up any controversy at your chance for a “first impression”, but perhaps some might find that doesn’t go along with being your “real” self.
