Simply Wonderful

When I was in my early twenty’s, I had a very good friend named Robin. She was funny and so fun to be around. We would shoot pool in a local bar, drink beer and laugh. Robin was beautiful, had long dark hair, a very petite but curvy figure and a wonderful smile. She used to joke that together we were the “whole package”; one blond and skinny and one brunette and busty. We were very close, and went out almost every night. We both had boyfriends, but that didn’t stop her from flirting with the guys at the pool table. She was full of life. That woman could drink beer, too. I could never keep up with her. And she loved country music. It was more like country rock, honestly, back then. When Lynyrd Skynyrd’s song “Simple Man” would play, Robin would say, “Why isn’t there a song about women like this? It isn’t fair. Our mama’s gave us good advice, too.” Then she would pretend to pout while her boyfriend spun her around and danced with her to the song playing at the bar. We loved each other, Robin and I, as much as friends could possibly love. We had so much fun during those party nights together.

Robin and I lost touch after I moved to California, and when I moved back to Indiana she soon moved to Michigan. She died a couple of years ago, and it is possibly my deepest regret in life so far that I didn’t get in touch with her.

In honor of a very special, very simple woman – she loved people, music, beer and fun – my simply wonderful friend, Robin, I give you “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

  1. Such fun times it is to spend around friends like Robin, I bet you shared imnumerable moments with her that are equally beautiful as they are meaningful. It’s unfortunate that you lost touch with her, but holding on to her memories means she is always a part of you. Thank you for sharing my dear friend Lisa.
